At Takoma Park Animal Clinic, we’re proud to provide pet dentistry services as a part of your pet’s complete veterinary wellness care.
Why Pet Dental Care Is So Important
Our pets need dental care, just like people do. Without it, they quickly develop dental health problems. Unfortunately, most pet owners aren’t aware that they should be caring for their pets’ teeth. As a result, an estimated 80% of dogs and 70% of cats over age three have already developed some form of periodontal disease.
Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection of the gums that occurs when plaque and tartar are allowed to accumulate. This oral infection can cause painful symptoms and lead to tooth loss. Additionally, bacteria from periodontal disease can enter a pet’s bloodstream where it damages the lungs, heart, liver, and kidneys. Left untreated, periodontal disease can cause systemic illnesses that lead to an early death.
How to Prevent Periodontal Disease in Pets
For healthy teeth and gums, pets should have a combination of at-home and professional dental care.
Home Dental Care
At home, brush your pet’s teeth with a toothbrush for dogs or cats and pet-safe toothpaste. Alternatively, you can clean your pet’s teeth with pet dental wipes. You can also provide your pet with dental-friendly treats and chew toys. Be sure to select VOHC-approved products that are designed specifically for your pet’s breed and size.
Professional Dental Care
Dental cleanings and exams for pets are similar to those for people. During your pet’s dental appointment, our veterinarian will scale and polish your pet’s teeth to remove plaque and tartar buildup. We’ll also perform a thorough examination, looking for any signs of potential problems like abscesses or broken teeth.
While pet dental appointments are similar to ours, a pet dental appointment takes place with our patient under general anesthesia. This ensures our patient’s comfort and safety.
Professional Pet Dentistry in Takoma Park
If your pet exhibits signs of oral pain; has red, swollen, or bleeding gums; has discolored teeth, missing teeth, or loose teeth; or has persistently bad breath, we encourage you to schedule a pet dentistry appointment right away. We’ll take a look at your pet’s teeth and recommend the proper treatments and at-home care to safeguard their ongoing health.
